In Memoriam • Elsie Skvir Nierle

Elsie Skvir Nierle of Williamsport, Pennsylvania fell asleep in the Lord on July 17, 2016.

Born on July 2, 1927 in Ganister, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late John Skvir and Paraskeva Skvir.  She was predeceased by her sister Mary, brothers Michael, Joseph and Reverend John, and her husband Dr. Richard H. Nierle.  She is survived by eight nieces and nephews.
 
After graduating from Williamsburg High School, Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, and the Jefferson University School of Nursing, she earned a B.S. degree from Temple University and a Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, both in Philadelphia.  She taught nursing for many years in the Philadelphia area, then at Bloomsburg University.
 
She was a founder of Holy Cross Orthodox Church in Williamsport, and a trustee of St. Vladimir Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York, where she endowed a faculty chair in Practical Theology in memory of her parents.
 
During the construction of Holy Cross Orthodox Church, she served as parish council president, and was honored at the 20th anniversary celebration of the church in November 1997 for her leadership.  In recognition of her work for the church both locally and nationally, she received the Order of St. Innocent from the Orthodox Church in America.
 
Family and friends will be received from 4:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday evening, July 20 at Holy Cross Orthodox Church, 1725 Holy Cross Lane, with a brief memorial service at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at the church Thursday morning at 11:00 AM, followed by a luncheon at the church social hall.  Burial will be at St. Mary’s Holy Assumption Orthodox Church cemetery in Ganister, Pennsylvania at 5:00 PM Thursday evening.
