Dr. Maria Khoury delivers a lecture at Bucknell University - 11/10/12
On Saturday evening, November 10th, Dr. Maria Khoury, a noted Orthodox Human Rights champion, presented a lecture entitled "The Christian Presence in the Holy Land Today" in the Gallery Theater at Bucknell University, Lewisburg.
Maria (Kouremenou) Khoury is a graduate of Hellenic College (1982), Harvard University (1985) and Boston University (1992) with a doctor of education degree. Born in Tripoli, Greece, she was raised in Denver, Colorado. On Dec 31, 2009 she was included on the top 4 Human Rights Champions list by DC Human Rights Examiner including the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and Hilary Clinton.
In 1995, following the Oslo Peace Agreement, Maria and her husband David made Taybeh, Palestine their main residence where they continue to live with their three children. David serves as the honorable mayor of Taybeh which is now surrounded by the Israeli West Bank Barrier Wall. Her family is active at St. George Orthodox Church. She is also a fundraiser for a housing project to help sustain the small Christian community living under military occupation. In 2012 she was a consultant interviewed on “60 Minutes” about the plight of Christians in the Holy Land.
Dr. Maria Khoury will continue to deliver a series of lectures at various stops in the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania.
