Annual Vacation Church School 2025 Hosted at Holy Apostles Church, Mechanicsburg, PA

MECHANICSBURG, PA [DOEPA]

From June 16-18, 2025, Holy Apostles Church in Mechanicsburg, PA, hosted their Annual Vacation Church School with this year's theme being "Ascending the Mountain of the Lord."

On Monday, June 16, the evening began at the church with an opening prayer. Archpriest Timothy Hojnicki, Rector, then introduced the theme to the children in preschool through 5th grade. Lessons, activities, crafts, and snacks centered on the Old Testament figures Moses and Elijah, with a focus on the Ten Commandments.

Meanwhile, the older children and teens gathered at the Potteiger Pool. There, Subdeacon Sebastian Crews led instruction and discussion about Moses and Elijah. Following the lesson, the youth enjoyed swimming, games, and fellowship around the fire pit with s’mores.

On Tuesday, June 17, the younger children then participated in group re-enactments of the Transfiguration, followed by discussion. They also created stained-glass icons and took part in water-themed games. The teens and older children gathered again at the pool for a lesson and discussion. Despite the pouring rain, they joyfully continued with swimming and activities.

On Wednesday, June 18, all age groups met together at the church to learn about the Saints of Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain, and their significance in the Orthodox Church. Youth participated in activities such as creating stained-glass icons or assembling Garden of the Theotokos terrariums. Additional games and crafts reinforced the theme of the evening.

The evening concluded with the celebration of Daily Vespers and a memorial service for Matushka Olga Michael, who was canonized as St. Olga of Alaska on June 20 in Kwethluk, Alaska. Following the services, all participants and their families enjoyed a time of fellowship and refreshments.

Holy Apostles Orthodox Church expresses sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the success of this year’s Vacation Church School. Clergy, volunteers, donors, and parents worked together to provide a meaningful and joyful experience for the parish youth.

Glory to God for all things!
