St. Herman of Alaska Welcomes MANY for Hierarchical Divine Liturgy
On Sunday morning September 24, 2023, the 229th anniversary of the arrival of the Valaam Mission to Kodiak, His Beatitude Metropolitan arrived at the Church for the celebration of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy for St. Herman of Alaska and the Holy Martyrs Peter the Aleut and Juvenaly the Hieromonk, after vesting in the center of the Church His Beatitude was joined by His Eminence Archbishop Mark and His Grace Bishop Alexis.
Three men of the parish, John Keriouk, Peter Basilevsky and Marcus Abraitis were tonsured Readers of the parish, followed by the elevation and bestowal of the Double Orar to Deacon Steven Orr.
The Church Choir under the direction of Reader Alexander Hubiak sang the solemn and prayerful responses throughout the weekend. At the conclusion of the services, 11 gramoty were bestowed upon various parishioners for their work in the parish. His Beatitude then bestowed the Primatial Award of St. Innocent of Alaska, Bronze, upon Subdeacon John Pusey for his many years of service in the OCA Chancery in Syosset, the Department of Christian Education, as assistant to Father John Perich at the Repository/Museum of the Orthodox Church in America at St. Tikhon’s Monastery and for the many exhibitions they have presented at the All American Church Councils and universities throughout the US over the last 15 years.
Special thanks to Archimandrite Nectarios (Serfes) of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver, Archpriest Joseph Toroney, attached, Protodeacon Peter Ilchuk, Deacon Gregory S. Hubiak, Reader Alexander Woodill, Secretary to the Metropolitan, Subdeacon Thomas Donlick, Sub deacon Sam Rigon, along with our own Subdeacon John Pusey and Subdeacon Alexander Nescott, both of which have been an invaluable help to our pastor Father John over the years.
The highlight of the weekend was the presentation to the bishops of exact copies of the Panagia and Cross of St. Innocent of Alaska as well as a special Primatial Set of three to His Beatitude, including a Panagia of Christ’s Resurrection a copy from the center Icon of the Gospel of St. Mark in Fox Island Aleut.
Also presentation of hand written Icons to His Eminence Archbishop Mark and His Grace Bishop Alexis and presentations to His Grace Bishop Alexis of several ecclesiastical articles to be returned to Alaska and the original Aer of St. Patriarch Tikhon to His Beatitude Metropolitan Tikhon for His Primatial Residence in Washington D.C.
