Feast of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross Celebrated at Theotokos of the Life-Giving Spring Mission

PHILADELPHIA, PA [DOEPA]

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, the clergy and faithful of Theotokos of the Life-Giving Spring Mission in Philadelphia, PA, gathered to celebrate the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross according to the Julian Calendar. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Archpriest Nikolai Gulin, Rector.

Ð’ воÑ�креÑ�енье, 27 Ñ�ентÑ�брÑ� 2026 года, наÑ�тоÑ�тель и прихожане миÑ�Ñ�ии в чеÑ�Ñ‚ÑŒ иконы Божией Матери «Ð–ивоноÑ�ный ИÑ�точник» в Филадельфии, штат ПенÑ�ильваниÑ�, отпраздновали праздник ВоздвижениÑ� ЧеÑ�тного и ЖивотворÑ�щего КреÑ�та ГоÑ�поднÑ� по Ñ�тарому (юлианÑ�кому) календарю. БожеÑ�твенную литургию возглавил наÑ�тоÑ�тель миÑ�Ñ�ии протоиерей Ð�иколай Гулин.

During the Divine Liturgy, the faithful received the Holy Mysteries of Christ and venerated His Precious Cross as the sign of His victory over death and the source of salvation for the world.

Во времÑ� БожеÑ�твенной литургии верующие причаÑ�тилиÑ�ÑŒ СвÑ�Ñ‚Ñ‹Ñ… ХриÑ�товых Таин и поклонилиÑ�ÑŒ ЧеÑ�тному КреÑ�ту ГоÑ�пода нашего ИиÑ�уÑ�а ХриÑ�та — знамению Его победы над Ñ�мертью и иÑ�точнику Ñ�паÑ�ениÑ� мира.

The Feast of the Exaltation commemorates the finding of the Precious Cross by Saint Helen in the fourth century and its return to Jerusalem in the seventh century after it had been captured by the Persians. On both occasions, the Cross was elevated before the faithful for their veneration. The feast calls the Church to behold the Cross not as an instrument of defeat, but as the sign of Christ’s victory over sin and death.

Праздник Воздвижени� Че�тного и Животвор�щего Кре�та Го�подн� �в�зан � обретением Че�тного Кре�та �в�той равноапо�тольной царицей Еленой в IV веке и его возвращением в Иеру�алим в VII веке по�ле того, как Кре�т был захвачен пер�ами. В обоих �луча�х Че�тной Кре�т был воздвигнут перед народом дл� поклонени�. Этот праздник призывает Церковь принимать Кре�т не как орудие поражени�, но как знамение победы Хри�та над грехом и �мертью.

The Exaltation of the Cross is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the ecclesiastical year. It is also observed as a strict fast in remembrance of the saving Passion and Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through prayer, fasting, and the veneration of the Cross, the faithful give thanks for the salvation accomplished through Christ’s voluntary sacrifice and are called to take up their own crosses and follow Him.

Воздвижение ЧеÑ�тного КреÑ�та — один из двунадеÑ�Ñ�Ñ‚Ñ‹Ñ… праздников церковного года. Ð’ Ñ�тот день Ñ�облюдаетÑ�Ñ� Ñ�трогий поÑ�Ñ‚ в памÑ�Ñ‚ÑŒ о Ñ�паÑ�ительных СтраданиÑ�Ñ… и РаÑ�пÑ�тии ГоÑ�пода нашего ИиÑ�уÑ�а ХриÑ�та. Через молитву, поÑ�Ñ‚ и поклонение КреÑ�ту верующие благодарÑ�Ñ‚ Бога за Ñ�паÑ�ение, Ñ�овершённое добровольным жертвенным подвигом ХриÑ�та, и призываютÑ�Ñ� взÑ�Ñ‚ÑŒ Ñ�вой креÑ�Ñ‚ и Ñ�ледовать за Ð�им.

This celebration came during a difficult but hopeful period of transition for the Mission as its growing parish community works to secure a permanent home. The proposed property would provide space for a church, parish hall, gymnasium, and other parish and community activities, establishing a lasting foundation for Orthodox Christian life in Northeast Philadelphia.

Празднование �того великого праздника пришло�ь на непро�той, но полный надежды период в жизни ми��ии. Ра�туща� приход�ка� община продолжает трудить�� над приобретением по�то�нного помещени� дл� �воего прихода. Планируема� к приобретению недвижимо�ть позволит ми��ии иметь храм, трапезную, �портивный зал и другие помещени� дл� приход�кой де�тельно�ти, �оздав прочное о�нование дл� право�лавной хри�тиан�кой жизни в �еверо-во�точной ча�ти Филадельфии.

The faithful throughout the Diocese are asked to prayerfully support Archpriest Nikolai and the Mission community by remembering them in prayer, sharing their campaign, and, when possible, offering financial assistance. As we sing in the Troparion of the feast:

“O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance. Grant victories to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries; and by virtue of Thy Cross, preserve Thy habitation!”

Верующих в�ей епархии про��т молитвенно поддержать протоиере� �икола� и общину ми��ии: поминать их в �воих молитвах, ра�про�тран�ть информацию о кампании по приобретению по�то�нного приход�кого дома и, по возможно�ти, оказывать финан�овую помощь. Как поёт�� в тропаре праздника:

«Ð¡Ð¿Ð°Ñ�и, ГоÑ�поди, люди ТвоÑ� и благоÑ�лови доÑ�тоÑ�ние Твое, победы правоÑ�лавным хриÑ�тианом на Ñ�опротивныÑ� даруÑ� и Твое Ñ�охранÑ�Ñ� КреÑ�том Твоим жительÑ�тво».

May the Lord strengthen this growing parish family and establish for them a lasting spiritual home.
