Diocesan Cathedral of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania Celebrates the Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God

PHILADELPHIA, PA [DOEPA]

On Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the clergy and faithful of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Diocesan Cathedral of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania, gathered to celebrate the Great Feast of the Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.

The festal celebration began on Monday evening with Great Vespers with Litiya in St. Michael the Archangel Chapel, as the faithful gathered in prayer to enter into the joy of the feast.

On Tuesday morning, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by Archpriest Victor Gorodenchuk, Cathedral Dean and Dean of the Philadelphia Deanery, with Deacon Tikhon Wallace serving, together with the faithful of the Cathedral. The choir was led under the direction of Cathedral Choir Director, John Miller.

During the Divine Liturgy, the faithful present partook of Christ's Holy Mysteries.

The Nativity of the Theotokos marks the beginning of the Church’s annual cycle of Great Feasts and commemorates the birth of the Mother of God to the righteous Joachim and Anna. Through her birth, the Church celebrates the beginning of the fulfillment of God’s saving work, as the Most Holy Theotokos would become the Mother of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ. As the Church proclaims in the festal troparion:

"Your Nativity, O Virgin, has proclaimed joy to the whole universe! The Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, has shone from you, O Theotokos! By annulling the curse, He bestowed a blessing. By destroying death, He has granted us eternal Life!"

Through the celebration of Great Vespers and the Divine Liturgy, the Cathedral community joined Orthodox Christians throughout the world in giving thanks to God for the birth of the Most Holy Theotokos and seeking her continued intercessions for the Church and the world.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us!
