BATH, PA [DOEPA COMMUNICATIONS]
On Saturday, April 25, 2026, on behalf of the Diocese of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania, the Diocesan Media Office extends its warmest congratulations to our beloved Vladyka, His Eminence Archbishop Mark, on the occasion of his namesday, the feast of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark.
The Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark, also known as John Mark (Acts 12:12), was one of the Seventy Apostles and a close companion of the Apostles Peter, Paul, and Barnabas. Born in Jerusalem, his mother’s home became an early gathering place for Christians, and according to Church Tradition, he was present at the Lord’s arrest and fled when seized (Mark 14:51–52). After the Ascension, Saint Mark labored in apostolic mission alongside Paul and Barnabas, preaching in Cyprus and witnessing the miracles of the Apostles (Acts 13:6–12), later traveling with the Apostle Peter to Rome, where he composed his Gospel, understood by the Fathers as a record of Saint Peter’s preaching. He then journeyed to Egypt, where he founded the Church in Alexandria, established a Christian school that formed renowned teachers of the faith, and composed a Liturgy, continuing his preaching throughout the region and bringing many to Christ. His missionary labors ultimately led to his martyrdom in Alexandria, where he suffered greatly for the Gospel and reposed in the Lord, commending his spirit into God’s hands. His holy relics were later enshrined with honor, and his memory is celebrated by the Church on April 25. In the iconographic tradition, Saint Mark is symbolized by the lion, representing the royal dignity and power of Christ (Rev. 5:5), and his Gospel emphasizes the mighty works of God and the call to proclaim the Good News to all creation.
On this joyous occasion, we as a Diocese wish His Eminence many blessed years, asking the Lord to grant him strength, health, and continued guidance in his archpastoral ministry. Through the intercessions of Saint Mark the Evangelist, may the Lord grant His Eminence many years.
EIS POLLA ETI DESPOTA!
