SHILLINGTON, PA [DOEPA]
From March 7-8, 2026, the Second Sunday of Great Lent, the Sunday of Saint Gregory Palamas, His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania made an archpastoral visit to St. Herman of Alaska Church in Shillington, PA, where he presided at the divine services and offered archpastoral encouragement to the faithful during the Lenten season.
On Saturday, March 7, His Eminence arrived at the church and was greeted. Great Vespers was served by Priest John Black, Rector, with His Eminence presiding from the throne. Following the service, Father John welcomed His Eminence and Archbishop Mark expressed gratitude for the welcome extended to him by the faithful of the parish.
On Sunday, March 8, upon His Eminence's arrival at the church, the bells were rung, and he was greeted with the traditional bread and salt and the Cross. Archbishop Mark celebrated the Divine Liturgy with Priest John Black concelebrating. The parish choir was led under the direction of Mrs. Marina Long.
Father John offered the homily. During the Divine Liturgy, many of the faithful received the Holy Eucharist.
Following the Dismissal, His Eminence offered an archpastoral word to the faithful. Reflecting on the Lenten season and the commemoration of Saint Gregory Palamas, he spoke about the importance of deepening one’s spiritual life through prayer, repentance, and renewed dedication to the life of the Church. His Eminence reminded the faithful that Great Lent is a time given by the Church for spiritual renewal, encouraging all present to make use of this sacred season to draw closer to Christ through participation in the services, fasting, and works of charity. Archbishop Mark also spoke about the continued growth of the parish community in Shillington, encouraging the faithful to remain steadfast in their commitment to building up the life of the Church. He emphasized the importance of unity, love for one another, and active participation in parish life, noting that strong communities are formed through the shared faith and dedication of their members. His Eminence expressed his joy at seeing the life of the parish and offered his prayers and encouragement for its continued growth.
After the service, a Lenten meal was prepared and served, providing the parish community with an opportunity for fellowship. His Eminence presented the flowers he had received upon arrival for the Divine Liturgy to Matushka Alexandra Black, acknowledging her tireless efforts. He expressed his appreciation for all the hard work that a matushka contributes and wanted to acknowledge her dedication.
The faithful enjoyed spending time with His Eminence and one another as they continued their Lenten journey. Archbishop Mark also spent time with the inquirers and catechumens, discussing various topics and answering questions about the Orthodox faith.
