WILLIAMSPORT, PA [DOEPA]
From September 13-14, 2025, the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania celebrated the patronal feast of Elevation of the Holy Cross Church in Williamsport, PA.
On Saturday, September 13, upon arrival at the temple, Archbishop Mark was greeted by Archpriest Seraphim Reynolds, Rector, and several members of the parish. During Great Vespers, the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord was brought out in procession. The Rite of Exaltation was served by His Eminence.
Following the service, His Eminence offered an archpastoral word and expressed his gratitude for the warm and heartfelt welcome extended by the faithful of the parish. Father Seraphim offered words of thanks in return, acknowledging Archbishop Mark's presence on the occasion of the parish's patronal feast day.
A lenten meal was served for the faithful and community in the church hall next door following the service.
On Sunday, September 14, His Eminence celebrated the Divine Liturgy with Father Seraphim and Archpriest Edward Hughes concelebrating. The choir was led under the direction of Reader John Barrett, a Seminarian at St. Tikhon's Theological Seminary.
His Eminence offered the homily on the importance of Christian suffering, highlighting its spiritual significance in the life of the faithful. Speaking on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, he reflected on how embracing trials with faith draws believers closer to Christ and strengthens their spiritual journey.
At the Divine Liturgy, many of the faithful received Christ’s Holy Mysteries.
"Before Thy Cross..." was sung by the clergy and faithful and the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord was venerated.
Following the dismissal, Archbishop Mark offered words of encouragement to Father Seraphim, Matushka Mary, the faithful of Holy Cross Church, and the entire community present. After the veneration of the Cross, a lenten meal was prepared in the church hall for the faithful and community present.
