Archbishop Mark Presides Over Holy Saturday Vesperal Liturgy at Christ the Saviour Church, Harrisburg, PA

HARRISBURG, PA [DOEPA]

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, Holy Saturday, His Eminence Archbishop Mark of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania celebrated the Vesperal Liturgy of St. Basil the Great with the 15 Old Testament Readings at Christ the Saviour Church in Harrisburg, PA.

Upon arrival at the temple, the faithful welcomed His Eminence. Archpriest Stephen Vernak, Rector, received Archbishop Mark and welcomed him for this great and holy day.

Archbishop Mark presided at the Vesperal Liturgy. Concelebrating with him were Father Stephen and the Mitred Archpriest Daniel Kovalak, with Deacon John Shingara. The choir was led under the direction of Reader James Kushlan.

According to the tradition of Holy Saturday, 15 Old Testament Readings were read. After the Epistle reading, before the reading of the Gospel, the clergy changed from dark colored vestments and covers to light.

His Eminence offered the homily reflecting on the quiet hope that rests between the Cross and the Resurrection. He spoke of Christ’s descent into death as a real act of love, not defeat, and reminded the faithful that even in silence, God is at work. He encouraged everyone to reflect on whether they are ready to rise with Christ, not only in joy but in the daily choices that lead to a life shaped by faith.

After the Ambo Prayer, Archbishop Mark blessed the wine and loaves.

Following the dismissal, His Eminence spoke to the faithful, offering words of gratitude and encouragement to Father Stephen, Matushka Anna, and the parish community of Christ the Saviour.

Glory to God for all things!
