GETTYSBURG, PA [DOEPA]
From March 15-16, 2025, the second Sunday of Great Lent, St. Gregory Palamas Sunday, His Eminence Archbishop Mark made an archpastoral visit to St. John the Theologian Mission in Gettysburg (New Oxford), PA, presiding over the services and offering guidance to the mission's faithful.
On Saturday, March 15, upon arrival to the mission, His Eminence was greeted by Archpriest Leonid Schmidt, Rector. Great Vespers was celebrated by Father Leonid, with Archbishop Mark presiding from the throne. Following the service, Father Leonid expressed his heartfelt thanks to Archbishop Mark for his presence and archpastoral leadership. Afterward, His Eminence met with Father Leonid and members of the parish council over dinner, where they discussed various important topics, including Evangelization Strategy and Ministry, among others.
On Sunday, March 16, His Eminence Archbishop Mark celebrated the Divine Liturgy. Serving with His Eminence were Father Leonid Schmidt and Deacon Peter Staller, Attached to Holy Apostles Church in Mechanicsburg, PA. The choir was led under the direction of Matushka Laura Schmidt.
His Eminence offered the homily centered on the themes of repentance and spiritual transformation, emphasizing the importance of change in the life of a true Christian. "Know and believe," His Eminence said, "change is possible." He reflected on the Gospel readings, encouraging the faithful to embrace the possibility of repentance and renewal in their lives.
At the Divine Liturgy, many of the mission's faithful received the Holy Eucharist.
Following the dismissal, His Eminence offered words of encouragement to Father Leonid, the faithful of St. John the Theologian Mission, and the entire community present. He urged them to continue sharing the Good Word and to stay proactive in their efforts. Father Leonid, on behalf of the parish, thanked His Eminence for his archpastoral visit, expressing the parish’s joy and honor in welcoming their Archpastor.
The youth of the parish presented Archbishop Mark with flowers as a gesture of appreciation. His Eminence, in turn, handed the flowers to Matushka Laura, thanking her for her tireless efforts in supporting Father Leonid and his work for the mission. Mr. Eric Fisak, Parish Council President, presented Archbishop Mark with a check on behalf of the mission. This contribution was designated for the St. Nikolai of Zhicha Fund to support the Youth Ministry within the diocese.
After the service, a Lenten meal was prepared and served, providing the parish community with an opportunity for fellowship. The faithful enjoyed spending time with His Eminence and one another as they continued their Lenten journey.
