SHILLINGTON, PA [DOEPA]
From March 1-2, 2025, Forgiveness Sunday, His Eminence Archbishop Mark made an archpastoral visit to St. Herman of Alaska Church in Shillington, PA.
On Saturday, March 1, His Eminence arrived at the church, and Great Vespers was served by Priest John Black, Rector, with His Eminence presiding from the throne.
On Sunday, March 2, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence. Father John served with Archbishop Mark and the Choir was led under the direction of Mrs. Marina Long.
In his homily, Archbishop Mark reflected on the Gospel reading, speaking about the meaning of being a "Citizen of the Kingdom." He also emphasized the vital need for forgiveness, pointing out that in the Ladder of Divine Ascent, the first rung is forgiveness. He made the point that without forgiveness, we cannot progress spiritually, and it is a necessary foundation for our journey toward God.
Following the Divine Liturgy, Forgiveness Vespers was served immediately.
After the service, His Eminence spoke about the importance of the Holy Eucharist as spiritual nourishment, which is especially needed during this Lenten season. He urged the faithful to always take it seriously and as often as possible. After the words of encouragement by Archbishop Mark, Father John expressed gratitude to His Eminence for his presence and archpastoral words.
The "Rite of Forgiveness" then took place, where His Eminence asked all the faithful individually for their forgiveness. The faithful present participated in the Rite, exchanging forgiveness with one another and responding with "God forgives, and I forgive."
Afterwards, a Lenten meal was prepared and served in the church hall downstairs. Many of the faithful joined together for fellowship, taking the opportunity to speak and spend time with His Eminence.
Glory to God for all things!
