The 2008 DCE Winter Teen Retreat was once again a great success. Held for the second year at Pocono Plateau Retreat Center, 24 teenagers from the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania gathered for a weekend of fellowship and reflection. There were two teens who traveled from as far away as Ohio and Maryland for the Retreat!

Blessing of the Delaware River - 01/22/08

Assumption of the Virgin Church was the host of this year’s Great Blessing of the Waters in Philadelphia. This year, we blessed the Delaware River from the deck of four-masted sailing ship “Moshulu” (largest sailing ship still afloat!) which is now a restaurant.

On December 11, 2007 there was a Clergy retreat held at Holy Trinity Church, Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Akathist to the Mother of God " She who is Quick to Hear" was served.  Following the service,  His Grace Bishop Tikhon, led the clergy in discussions regarding the Liturgical life of the Diocese.   Our many thanks to the Parish community of Holy Trinity for their warm hospitality.

On Saturday December 1st, the diocese held it's Annual Men's Retreat.  Dr. Leon Sheean, retired Laboratory Director of University Hospitals of Cleveland and Assistant Professor of Reproductive Biology at Case Western Reserve University was the main speaker.  This years topic, " Fertility, Medicine and Men."  was well received by over 30 men attending the retreat

Service of Thanksgiving - 11/28/07

On Wednesday November 21st, The Orthodox Council of Churches of South Central Pennsylvania held a Service of Thanksgiving at Holy Apostles Mission, Mechanicsburg, PA.  His Grace, Bishop Tikhon was the main Celebrant and Homilist.  Concebrating with His Grace were, Father Timothy Hojnicki, Host Pastor and President of OCCSCP; Father Daniel Ressetar; Fr Srb Jockovich, St Nicholas Serbian Church, Steelton; Fr Yanini Verginnis, Holy Trinity Greek Cathedral, Camp Hill and Fr Stephen Vernak, Christ the Saviour Church, Harrisburg.  Following the service, the Parish hosted a  social hour in honor of Thanksgiving.

90th Anniversary Celebration - 11/25/07

On November 17th-18th St. Nicholas Church, Philadelphia PA celebrated it's 90th Anniversary. Following Great Vespers, His Grace, Bishop Tikhon was welcomed by the parish for a coffee hour, and a parish question and answer time.  His Grace celebrated the Divine Liturgy, on Sunday, with the parish Rector, Archpriest John Bohush and Archpriest John Udics, Dean of the Philadelphia Deanery.  Following the service, a Banquet was held in honor of the Anniversary.

44th Diocesan Assembly - 11/19/07

Bethlehem, PA – The Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania held its 44^th Annual Assembly here on November 16^th and 17^th, 2007. Over 60 clergy and lay delegates gathered for two days of prayer, fellowship and meetings at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.

44th Annual Diocesan Assembly Begins - 11/16/07

On Friday, November 16th, The 44th Annual Diocesan Assembly opened with the celebration of Vespers at St Nicholas Church, Bethlehem, PA.  The assembly began with a presentation by His Grace, Bishop Tikhon.  Following his presentation, His Grace introduced Fr Alexander Garklavs, Chancellor of the Orthodox Church in America, to offer words and answer questions.  The Assembly ended for the evening with dinner and will reconvene following the Divine Liturgy on Saturday Morning.

St Michael Church, Jermyn, PA - 11/13/07

On Sunday November 11th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to St. Michael Church, Jermyn, PA.  During the Divine Liturgy, His Grace ordained Subdeacon Adam Sexton to the Holy Diaconate and also Blessed the new shrine for the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God, which was placed in the Parish this past August.  Archpriest John Kowalczyk was presented with a Synodal Gramota for his service to the Diocese as well as to St Tikhon's Seminary.  Following the Service, the parish held its annual St Michael's Day Banquet. 

Christ the Saviour Church, Harrisburg, PA - 11/08/07

On Sunday November 4th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to Christ the Saviour Church, Harrisburg, PA.  Prior to the Celebration of the Divine Liturgy, His Grace met with the children of the Parish. Following the Divine Liturgy, Fr Stephen Vernak was installed as the Rector of the Parish.  In honor of the occasion, the parish held a breakfast in their social hall.

St John the Baptist Church, Edwardsville, PA - 11/03/07

On Thursday November 1st, His Grace Bishop Tikhon visited St John the Baptist Church, Edwardsville, PA.  The Parish is sponsoring a Memorial Brick section. The bricks are located  in front of the addition that was completed several years ago.  His Grace, Blessed the Memorial followed by the singing of the Akathist,  Glory to God for All Things.  Following the service, a dinner was held, during which the parishoners discused the life of their parish community.  

30th Anniversary Celebration - 10/31/07

On Sunday October 28th, Holy Cross Church Williamsport, PA concluded what has been a 2 month celebration of their 30th Anniversary year.  On the Feast of the Holy Cross (September13/14), the Parish began, what they called "Outreach" Celebration.  The celebration included, Services for the Feast of the Cross, a Festival of Icons, "Journeys to Orthodoxy" and a Liturgical Concert by the Group "Lyra".   The final Celebration was the Divine Liturgy, celebrated by  His Grace, Bishop Tikhon.  Following the service, the Parish hosted a luncheon.

St. Michael Church, Old Forge, PA - 10/24/07

On Sunday October21st, His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to St. Michael Church, Old Forge, PA.  His Grace celebrated the Divine Liturgy and offered the homily.  Following the Divine Liturgy, Fr John Soucek was installed as the Rector of the Parish.  In honor of the occasion, the parish held a luncheon in their social hall.

Centennial Celebration - 10/25/07

On Saturday October 20th, St. Vladimir Church, Lopez, PA celebrated it's Centennial Anniversary.  His Grace, Bishop Tikhon celebrated the Divine Liturgy with the parish Rector, Hieromonk Michael (Thier), along with 12 visiting clergy.  The responses were sung by the Monastics from Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Ellwood City, PA.  Attending the celebration were V. Rev. Andrew Matychak, Mother Christophora, and Matushka Irene Borick (wife of the late Fr Paul Borick), coming to their home parish for the anniversary.  Following the Divine Liturgy, the Parish held a festive Banquet.  During the presentations many parishoners offered remarks on the 100 years of the life of the parish.      

Mission Trip to Guatemala - 10/10/07

This summer, Father Nicholas J. Solak, parish priest at Holy Trinity Church in Stroudsburg, participated in an OCMC Missionary Trip to Guatemala City, Guatemala. Orthodox Christians and an Orthodox presence in this third world Latin America country is a new reality. But Orthodox growth is taking hold in a surprising and inspiring way.

Parish Vist to SS Peter and Paul Church, Uniondale, PA - 10/07/07

On Sunday October 7th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon Celebrated the Divine Liturgy at SS Peter and Paul Church, Uniondale, PA.  Following the Service the Parish hosted a Coffee hour, where his Grace held a Question and Answer talk.

Parish Building Project Moves Forward - 10/01/07

His Grace, Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to St Michael Church Wilmington, DE on Saturday September 29th-Sunday September 30th.  During his visit, his Grace attended Great Vespers and Celebrated the Divine Liturgy.  Following the Divine Liturgy, the Parish held a Cross Procession to the site of the new social hall, and a service for the Blessing of any good work was sung.  Afterwards there was a festive dinner in honor of the event.  Following the dinner, His Grace met with members of the Deleware OCF.

Parish visit to St Mark Church, Wrightstown, PA - 09/23/07

On Sunday September 23rd, His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to St Mark Orthodox Church, Wrightstown, PA. The Parish of St Mark's was honoring Protodeacon Gregory Moser on the Ocassion of his 20th Anniversary of Ordination. During the Divine Liturgy, His Grace awarded Protodeacon Gregory the right to wear the Kamilavka. Following the Service, the Parish hosted a Banquet in honor of the Protodeacon and his family.

On Sunday September 16th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon celebrated the Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity Church Catasaqua, PA. Following the Divine Liturgy the Parish hosted a luncheon for the community.

Patronal Feast of St Mary's Church, Coaldale, PA - 09/11/07

On Sunday September 9th St Mary's Orthodox Church, Coaldale PA celebrated their Patronal Feastday. His Grace, Bishop Tikhon celebrated the Divine Liturgy followed by a Banquet/Dinner Dance in honor of the Feastday.

St Michael Orthodox Church, Jermyn - 08/19/07

On Sunday August 12th, St Michael's Church in Jermyn, PA was presented with a gift of a copy of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God. The icon was given to the parish by Protodeacon and Matushka Gabriel Petorak, on the occassion of their Golden Anniversary. The Icon was Blessed during the Divine Liturgy, concelebrated by Archpriests John Kowalczyk, Rector; Daniel Geeza and Michael Dahulich. Following the Service, the parish presented Fr Michael with the final installment of their Adopt a Seminarian Scholarship.

On Sunday August 19th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon visited St John the Baptist Church, Nanticoke, PA. Following the Divine Liturgy, a luncheon was held in the Parish Hall.

Women's Retreat - 08/12/07

Seventy-five women ranging from ages 13-85 attended the 13th Annual Women’s Retreat on Saturday, August 11th at St. Tikhon’s Seminary auditorium. His Grace, Bishop Tikhon began the day with the Supplicatory Canon for the Most-Holy Theotokos. Fr. John Russin lead the singing of the responses for the Canon. Mother Raphaela, Abbess of Holy Myrrhearers Monastery, Otego, New York was the main speaker. The morning session focused on the Most-Holy Theotokos and the importance of having her in our lives. She answered many questions ranging from discovering your role in the church to home schooling.

In Memoriam: Matushka Karen Mahaffey - 08/09/07

We are saddened to announce that Matushka Karen Mahaffey fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, August 8, 2007, after a long battle with cancer. She is the wife of Archpriest David Mahaffey, the Rector of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Pottstown.

Funeral services will be celebrated at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, at Holy Trinity Church in Pottstown. His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman and His Grace, Bishop Tikhon, will preside along with concelebrating clergy.

On Saturday, August 11, at 1 p.m., a Panikhida will be served at the Monastery Church of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, followed by burial at the Monastery Cemetery.

St Stephen's Cathedral Parishoner works with IOCC - 07/01/07

On July 1, 2007 a 9 member team of IOCC volunteers, including Katie Ren from St Stephen’s Cathedral, Philadelpia, PA,  arrived in Louisiana to aid in the Gulf Coast Disaster Relief. Relief efforts have been in effect in this capacity since November 2006 and will conclude at the end of July 2007. IOCC has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to rebuild homes for those who are still left homeless nearly 2 years after the storm. IOCC was one of the first organizations to come to the aid of those affected by Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi after the storm initially devastated the Gulf Coast, and they are still working diligently ----.

2007 St. Tikhon's Summer Camp - 07/08/07

On Sunday July 8th, St Tikhon's Summer Camp kicked off. This year there are over 120 campers and 40 staff members. The theme for this year is "An Attitude of Gratitude." Activities will include learning about the Divine Liturgy, Proskomedia and baking Prosphora. Campers will enjoy swimming, paddle boating, fishing and a multitude of organized sports and recreational activities. Each day begins with prayer, followed by breakfast and room cleaning. Throughout the day, campers participate in workshops and arts and crafts. The day ends with Evening Prayers and a light snack.

Our Teen Program consists of workshops and lectures, sports and recreation, as well as fun in the kitchen, with "Ethnic" cooking. The theme for the teens is "Tradition", where they discuse the traditions that are unique to our Orthodox Faith.

Wilkes-Barre Lower Deanery Vacation Church School - 06/21/07

In late June 2007, the Wilkes-Barre Lower Deanery held its annual Vacation Church School. It was a combined effort, coordinated by the Church School teachers of Holy Resurrection Cathedral Wilkes-Barre, Holy Trinity Church Wilkes-Barre, St John the Baptist Church Nanticoke, and St John the Baptist Church, Edwardsville.

Clergy Continuing Education Symposium - 06/14/07

St. Tikhon's Orthodox Theological Seminary, South Canaan, PA held its annual Continuing Education Symposium from June 12-14, 2007. Featured speakers for this year were Prof. David C. Ford, Ph.D. and Very Rev. David Hester, SEOD. Participants were also able to share in Table talks with His Grace, Bishop Tikhon.

Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Stroudsburg - 06/10/07

On Sunday June 10th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon visited Holy Trinity Church, Stroudsburg.  Following the Divine Liturgy, a procession was held, followed by a Molieben for the continued building up of Orthodoxy in the Stroudsburg Area.

Feast of All Saints celebrated in Olyphant - 06/03/07

On Sunday June 3rd, His Grace celebrated the Feast of All Saints in Olyphant, PA. Following the Divine Liturgy, the Parish held its annual Patronal Feast Dinner.  His Grace was able to view the work on the renovation of the church which was ravaged by fire in 2006.

On Sunday May 13th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to St Mary Church, Coaldale, PA.  After the Divine Liturgy a luncheon was held in honor of Mother's Day.

Bp. Tikhon Visits Pottstown, PA - 05/05/07

On Saturday May 5th and Sunday May 6th His Grace Bishop Tikhon visited Holy Trinity Church, Pottstown, PA. During the visit, John Kenneth Sekellick was tonsured a reader and Protodeacon Peter Skoog was awarded the Kamilavka.  Following the Divine Liturgy, His Grace Blessed the recent renovations to the church hall, followed by a meal.

Ordination to the Holy Priesthood of Deacon James Chuta - 04/29/07

On Sunday April 29th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to Holy Cross Church, Williamsport, PA.  During the Divine Liturgy, His Grace ordained Deacon James Chuta to the Holy Priesthood.  After the Service, the parish held a dinner in honor of Fr James.

On Sunday March 25th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon celebrated the Feast of the Annunciation at Holy Annunciation Church, Berwick, PA.  Following the Divine Liturgy a meal was held in honor of the parish's Patronal Feast.  The evening Mission vespers was held in St Michael's Church, Mt. Carmel, PA.  Rev. Timothy Hojnicki was the guest homilist. 

Bp. Tikhon Visits St. Clair and Wilkes Barre, PA - 03/18/07

Lenten Retreat for Diocesan Clergy - 03/15/07

On Thursday, March 15th, a lenten retreat was held at St Tikhon's Seminary for the Clergy of our diocese.  Dr Harry Boosalis offered a presentation on "The Joy of Knowing God" followed by a discussion led by His Grace.

The Frackville Deanery held a Presanctified Liturgy on March 7th, with the St Tikhon's Seminary Mission Choir singing the responses. His Grace Bishop Tikhon was the main celebrant. Over $1,000.00 was given to the Seminary. SS Peter and Paul Church, Minersville was the host Parish.

Bp. Tikhon visits Holy Apostles Mission, Mechanicsburg, PA - 02/11/07

His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to Holy Apostles Mission, Mechanicsburg, PA, on February 10-11.  This was the first official visit of His Grace, to the new location of the Mission.

Annual Teen Retreat - 02/11/07

February 9-11th brought nearly 30 teens to the annual teen retreat for the Diocese of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania.  Due to the large enrolment at St Tikhon's Seminary, the retreat was held at Pocono Plateau, a Christian retreat center located in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania.

Bp. Tikhon visits St. John the Baptist Church in Edwardsville, PA - 01/14/07

On Sunday January 14th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an Archpastoral visit to the Parish of St. John the Baptist, Edwardsville, PA.  During the visit His Grace installed Fr. Raymond Martin Browne as the rector of the Parish. After the Divine Liturgy a luncheon was held in the parish hall.

Patronal Feast of St. Stephen's Cathedral, Philadelphia, PA - 12/27/06

On December 26-27, 2006 His Grace Bishop Tikhon visited the Cathedral of St. Stephen the Proto-Martyr for it's Patronal Feast day.  During the visit, His Grace tonsured four readers and awarded Priest Victor Gorodenchuk the Nebedrinak.

Akathist / Reception of St Nicholas at St Michael's Church, Old Forge, PA - 12/03/06

On Sunday December 3, 2006 the Wilkes Barre Deanery held an Akathist to St Nicholas the Wonderworker at St Michael's Church, Old Forge, PA.  His Grace Bishop Tikhon was the main celebrant.  Following the Akathist, the Department of Christian Education held  a reception, with a visit from "St. Nicholas" himself.  Our Thanks to St Michael's Community for hosting the service and reception.

On Sunday December 3, 2006 His Grace Bishop Tikhon made an archpastoral visit to St Michael's Church in Old Forge, PA.  During the Celebration of the Divine Liturgy, His Grace, on behalf of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America, awarded Fr David the right to wear the palitza.  A Breakfast was held in the parish social hall after the Divine Liturgy.

Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) established at Bloomsburg University - 11/27/06

On Monday evening, November 27th, His Grace Bishop Tikhon met with the newly established Orthodox Christian Fellowship of Bloomsburg University. During the visit, His Grace was given a tour of the campus and held a question and answer session with the students.

43rd Annual Assembly Held in Bethlehem, PA - 11/18/06

The Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania held its 43rd Annual Assembly here on November 17th and 18th, 2006. Over 60 Clergy and Lay delegates gathered for an expanded two-day meeting at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.

Men's Retreat: Faith and Science - An Orthodox Doctor's Perspective - 11/11/06

On Saturday, November 11, 2006, the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania hosted its Third Annual Men's Retreat at St Tikhon's Seminary. The Theme for this year's encounter was "Faith and Science." An Orthodox Doctor's Perspective. Our Guest presenter was Nicola Nicoloff, M.D., F.A.C.C., renowned cardiologist in greater eastern Ohio area, choir director of St. John's Church in Campbell and a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Tikhon's Seminary.

Bp. Tikhon visits St. Stephen's, the Diocesan Cathedral, in Philadelphia, PA - 10/29/06

On October 28-29th Bishop Tikhon made a visit to the Diocesan Cathedral of St Stephen in Philadelphia, PA.  This visit marked the first anniversary of His Grace as ruling Hierarch of the Diocese.  On Saturday evening Great Vespers were served, and afterwards, Priest Victor Gorodenchuk, Dean of the Cathedral, was able to show His Grace the progress of the new lower entrance and handicap chair lift.  On Sunday morning the Liturgy was celebrated, after which His Grace met with the children of the parish, and answered their questions. Later that afternoon the parish held their Annual Meeting.

90th Anniversary of St. Nicholas Church in Bethlehem - 10/15/06

On Sunday, October 15th, St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Bethlehem, PA, celebrated its 90th Anniversary.  His Beatitude Metropolitan Herman, together with His Grace Bishop Tikhon, led the faithful in the celebration of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy.  Following the service a banquet was held in honor of the joyous occasion.

Skills Conference for Christian Education and Youth Ministries - 09/30/06

On Saturday, September 30, 2006, the Department of Christian Education of the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania, in conjunction with the OCA Department of Christian Education, sponsored a skills conference at St. Tikhon's Seminary. The conference was entitled "Building Skills for Christian Education and Youth Ministries: Equipping the Saints".

Retirement of VRev. Daniel Ressetar - 09/24/06

Diocesan Council Meeting - 06/27/06

On Tuesday, June 27th, His Grace Bp. Tikhon and the members of the Diocesan Council met at St. Tikhon's. His Grace gave a report which is available for download.  A report was also given by the Treasurer and by the Metropolitan Council representatives, Fr. John Onofrey and John Zoranski.

Bp. Tikhon visits All Saints Church in Olyphant, PA - 06/18/06

On the Sunday of All Saints, the patronal feast of the parish, His Grace, Bishop Tikhon served the Divine Liturgy and presented Father Paul and the Church Committee with a total of $28,000 as a gift from the parishes of the Diocese of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Preparations for Summer Camp 2006 - 06/10/06

On Saturday, June 10th, a meeting was held at St. Tikhon's Seminary to continue preparations for this year's summer camp, which is to be held at St. Tikhon's, July 9-15, 2006. Campers were assigned to rooms and appointed counselors, and other details were discussed.
